HISTORY OF ARYA SAMAJ

Arya Samaj is a Hindu reform movement founded by Swami Dayananda Saraswati on April 7, 1875, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. The movement aims to revive Hinduism by returning to the teachings of the Vedas, the oldest Hindu scriptures. Swami Dayananda, a critic of prevalent social and religious practices, emphasized monotheism and the importance of truth, promoting values like social equality and education.

Arya Samaj has been instrumental in establishing numerous educational institutions, such as the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) schools and colleges, which integrate Vedic knowledge with modern education. It actively campaigns against caste discrimination, child marriage, and untouchability, while supporting widow remarriage and women’s education. Rejecting idol worship, Arya Samaj promotes Yajnas (sacrificial rituals) and Vedic studies.

The movement rapidly spread in North India, especially in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, attracting the educated middle class and contributing to the Indian independence movement. Internationally, it has significant communities in Mauritius, South Africa, and the United States.

Notable figures like Lala Lajpat Rai and Swami Shraddha Nand were key contributors to Arya Samaj’s social and educational initiatives. Today, Arya Samaj continues to influence Hindu society through its commitment to Vedic principles and contemporary social issues.
